First Clean Sweep for 2024

It almost didn’t happen, but the Melbourne Tigers swept the weekend for the first time in 2024 with the Men now got two in the win column and four for the women.

Women

The women entered the weekend with a nice 2-2 record, Waverley led at the first break, before the Tigers got a small lead at the half, they extended it in the third and then extended the margin by one in the last to win it 68-56.

The next night saw the Tigers take on Diamond Valley, the Tigers got out to a four-point lead at the end of the first, maintained the margin at the half, doubled the margin at the end of the third and increased the lead by three at the last to win it 83-72.

Men

The men were losing to Waverley 93-92 and seemingly heading for a 0-5 record when Mason Gaze took a shot in the final seconds to win it for the Tigers, hearts were broken when the shot missed but Callum Barker under immense pressure managed to get one arm above the Waverley defence and put the ball in fractions of a second before time ran out to get the Men on the board for season 2024.

The next night, the Tigers Men faced Diamond Valley and the men came home with an 89-79 victory over the Eagles to make their record a much better 2-4 which is better than 1-5 or 0-6.

The Men have moved up to sixteenth on the ladder out of the nineteen but it is not all bad news because teams up to fifth have three wins so a run could push the Tigers up the order, it must be taken into account that teams have played between four and seven games.

Coming Up

Just the one game this weekend for both Tigers teams, they are back at MSAC to take on the Eltham Wildcats with the women playing at 5:30pm followed by the Men at 7:30pm so if you want to have a great night out, head on out to MSAC.

Go Tigers.

Four games in

Four games in and it is a mixed bag of results for the Melbourne Tigers, here are how things are looking at the moment.

Women

The Women are 2-2 having won their first two and losing their last two, this puts them in ninth position but they in touch with the leaders.

The seven-point loss to Ringwood was a game that could have gone either way, the third period was the difference in the two teams and the loss to Knox was determined in the second and third periods as the Tigers were outscored thirteen points each period.

Jade Melbourne is among the leaders in points, assists and is leading steals, Abbey Sutherland is co-leading the block averages.

Coming up is Waverley (2-2) and Diamond Valley (1-2), two interesting games ahead for the women who have the potential to end the weekend at 4-2.

Men

The Men are 0-4 to start the season, they opened with a six-point loss to Dandenong, a fifteen-point loss to Nunawading, a six-point loss to Ringwood and a thirty-two-point loss to Knox so it is a mixed bag of losses.

The six-point losses show that just a few event changes could have resulted in wins, but the fifteen and thirty-two-point losses are concerning.

Tom Wilson is leading scorer for the Men followed by Mason Gaze, Tom is just outside the Top 20 of the league and Mason is just outside the Top 30.

There are no home games this week as the Tigers travel to Waverley and Diamond Valley, Waverley are two and two and Diamond Valley are 0-3 so there is a good chance of picking up W’s to get the season going.

The 2024 Season is Here!

Tonight, is the night, the start of the 2024 NBL1 South season for the Melbourne Tigers and it is an exciting time for Tigers fans.

There is something different about the Tigers this year, we have all seen that the club has worked hard to secure new partnerships with businesses and recruiting has gone well, the club even secured the services of Jade Melbourne for a couple of games before she has to go back to the WNBA.

Tom Wilson is back for the Men too; he spent a couple of years playing Aussie Rules for Collingwood including 8 games in the AFL up to the end of last year, he’ll be working with Jack Purchase, Mason Gaze, Michael Wearne and many fine Tigers.

The Tigers even have Tigers TV which is cool, get to know more about what is going on and more.

Life has been a bit crazy the last few years but hopefully this blog will be worked on weekly, no matter if nobody, one person or many people read it.

Go Tigers.

2024 Signings (23/2/24)

It has been an interesting couple of years for the Melbourne Tigers, there have been good years and some bad years, but this year could be the best of them.

Tom Wilson is back after a couple of years playing football for Collingwood and he will be playing alongside Mason Gaze and Jack Purchase, if those three get along famously on court, anything is possible.

Amy O’Neill, Charlotte Brancatisano, Steph Blicavs, Hannah Giddey, Sammy Simons, Abbey Sutherland and Ella Ogier have all signed up to play in the Women’s team, there is plenty of experience in this team so far.

There are plenty more players to come and those who live near MSAC will be very lucky to see them in action, don’t forget all the games are streamed so those who can’t go, can watch online.

Melbourne Tigers greatest ever NBL1 South day so far

Sunday was a special day for the Melbourne Tigers, the club celebrated thirty years since the Tigers defeated the Perth Wildcats in NBL competition.

The team were up against the Mt. Gambier Pioneers, a formidable team whose sides were towards the pointy end of the ladder.

Victory by the Tigers would be the icing on the celebratory cake.

Women

The Tigers came into this round facing a team that started the weekend in third spot and the Pioneers started the game in fine fashion by establishing a five-point lead at the end of the period.

The scoring was even in the second period with the two sides scoring 21 points apiece and the Pioneers held on to their five-point lead at the main break.

The Tigers got going in the third period and outscored the Pioneers by five points to level up the game and set up a thrilling conclusion.

The Pioneers got the margin out to four in the first minute before Lily Carmody halved it before scoring again to even things up.

The Tigers then hit the front but a Pioneers three swung the game in their favor, Nikki Metcalfe then scored two and then sunk two free throws to put the Tigers ahead with just over four and a half minutes to go.

Nikki Metcalfe then sunk one of her two free throw attempts to extend the Tigers lead to four before a Pioneers three brough the margin down to one with three minutes and one second remaining.

A scare for the Tigers occurred when the Pioneers scored a three with just over two-minutes remaining, but there was drama as the shot clock expired just as the ball was being shot and the Tigers retained their one-point lead.

A minute later the Pioneers were again looking to score, once again the shot clock expired before they could do so and seconds later Lily Carmody scored from a free throw attempt to extend the margin to two points.

The Pioneers could not score in the last minute and the Tigers held on to win 67-65 to kick off the thirtieth-year celebration in fine style.

Samantha Simons top scored with 26 points to continue her fine season with the Tigers.

Men

The Tigers Men were next on court against the then ladder leading Pioneers who had narrowly lost to Geelong the previous night upsetting their 6-0 start to the season.

The Tigers had a hot start and led 28-18 at the end of the first period, the Pioneers got going in the second period but the Tigers extended their lead by one to lead 53-42.

The Tigers started the second half in style by scoring 28 points and with the Pioneers only getting 14, the lead was out to 25 points and Tigers fans were a period away from celebrating the perfect day.

Tigers fans weren’t completely comfortable as Nunawading came back from a big deficit to scare the team, Pioneers efforts were stifled in the last two minutes as Jordon Timmins put in two and Taj Chehhal put in five points including one with three seconds left to leave the margin at 24 points.

The Tigers Men have now squared the ledger and remain fairly close to the new leaders Frankston who have a 6-2 record so far this season.

Next up is the Eltham Wildcats and they are twelfth in the Womens competition and second in the Mens competition, both can be won if the Tigers play to their absolute best.

A mixed bag in Tasmania

The Tigers travelled to Tasmania last week with the Men playing against the Hobart Chargers and NW Tasmania Thunder while the Women played the Hobart Chargers and Launceston Tornadoes.

Men

The Hobart Chargers came out firing and had a 25-13 lead at the end of the first period, things only slightly improved when the Chargers outscored the Tigers 24-18 to lead 49-31 at the half time break.

The game was more evenly matched in the third period with the Chargers extending their lead by only one point to take a nineteen-point lead into the last period.

The Tigers got into gear in the last period and outscored the Chargers by eight, but it wasn’t enough as the Chargers went on to win 82-71.

Only 19.05% of three-point attempts landed but they had much better success with two-point attempts with 48.65% going in.

Michael Wearne led the Tigers scorers with nineteen points with Callan McDonald having fourteen rebounds.

Tigers vs. Thunder

The next night saw the Tigers play the NW Tasmania Thunder and the Tigers had the opposite of starts this night by leading 25-11 at the end of the first period.

The scoring was closer in the second with the Tigers outscoring the Thunder by one to lead 42-27 at the half.

The Tigers increased their lead by two in the third but the Thunder outscored the Tigers 17-15 in the last but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers flew home with the 84-69 win.

Three-point shooting was the big different with 38.24% going in for the Tigers compared to 13.04% for the Thunder.

Jack Purchase topped the scoring with 28 points and Callan McDonald had 11 rebounds.

Women

It was a tale of two halves for the women against the Chargers, the first period they were ahead by one with the score 16-15, the were still ahead by one after scoring 17 points apiece leaving the score 33-32.

The wheels fell off for the Tigers in the third as the Chargers scored in 83.33% of their two-point attempts compared to the Tigers 0% and scored 24 points to 6 to comfortably lead the game.

The Chargers poured in another 26 points in the last period compared to the Tigers 12 to win the game 82 to 51.

Tigers vs. Tornadoes

The Tornadoes got out to a two-point lead at the end of the first period before outscoring the Tigers by six in the second period to end the half with an eight-point lead with the scores 49-41.

The Tigers fought back in the third period by outscoring the Tornadoes by four to halve the margin and setting up a thrilling conclusion.

Unfortunately, the game did not go the Tigers way as the Tornadoes won by extending their lead by two thanks to Keely Froling scoring 38 of the Tornadoes points in the game to win by six points.

Lily Carmody topped the scoring for the Tigers with 22 points and Angelique Francis scored from all four of her two-point attempts and had seven rebounds just one behind Lily Carmody.

Next Up

It is celebration time this Sunday as the Tigers celebrate thirty-years since winning their first NBL Championship.

The opposition is the Mt. Gambier Pioneers who are currently leading the Men’s competition and third in the Women’s competition so the Tigers best will be needed, they can get it done as they have the skills, everything just has to fall into place.

A mixed bag in Dandenong

The Melbourne Tigers last Saturday night went to Dandenong to take on the Rangers, the two teams have played some great games against each other and last Saturday was no exception.

Women

The Tigers Women were in great form but were missing Jade Melbourne and were hit by the news that Monique Conti was not going to play with the Tigers this year.

Regardless of these events the women led at the end of the first period 22-20 then lead at half time 36-33 before leading at the end of the third period 57-52.

The wheels fell off for the women in the last period as the Rangers scored 28 points to the Tigers 15 to win 80-72, two-point shooting in the last was the big difference as the Rangers scored in 63.64% of attempts whilst the Tigers scored in 15.38% of attempts.

Samantha Simons led the scoring with 27 points and Angelique Francis grabbed ten rebounds for the team.

Men

The Tigers Men got their first win of the season earlier in the week against Nunawading and were looking to make it two in a row against the Rangers.

The Tigers led at the end of the first period 24-21 and had a superb second period to lead 49-38 at half time, the Rangers made slight inroads on the Tigers in the third period but still trailed the Tigers 68-59.

The Tigers scoring picked up as they outscored the Rangers 27-23 to record a comfortable 95-82 win.

Taj Chehhal and Jack Purchase shared the scoring honours with 22 points each with Callan McDonald picking up 11 rebounds.

Conclusion

The Men are starting to get it together and they now have two wins in a row with the Hobart Chargers and NW Tasmania Thunder coming up.

The Women are doing well this year, the fade out against Dandenong was not great but these things do happen, they’ll improve on things, it will be interesting to see how they go in Tasmania as they’ve got the Hobart Chargers and Launceston Tornadoes.

Tigers Sweep the Spectres……Just!

The Melbourne Tigers got their first sweep of the season, though it almost wasn’t to be thanks to a late charge by the Spectres Men.

The Tigers Women moved to 2-2 after comfortably defeating Nunawading 88 to 71.

It was a fairly even first half with the Tigers ahead by six points at the half, they doubled their lead by the end of the third period and then increased it by five in the last to win by 17 points and even up their season.

Samantha Simons top scored for the Tigers with 23 points followed by Jade Melbourne with 18 points, Jade topped the Rebounds and Assists with twelve and eleven of them respectively.

54.24% of two-point attempts went in and 35% of three-point attempts went in, the Tigers three point shooting improved in the second half with 50% going in both periods compared to 25% and 16.67% in the first two periods.

The Men were on court next their new look and the new looked seemed to have worked wonders as they scored 29 points in the first period to take a comfortable 16 point lead.

It was a 23-point lead at half time and most teams would feel comfortable with that big of a lead, but Nunawading are a good team and they outscored the Tigers by 10 in the third to reel the margin in to a more manageable 13 points.

Melbourne’s 3-point percentage dropped from a high of 60% in the second period to 0% in the last as they missed all three attempts, Nunawading had eleven attempts with three of them landing.

With twelve seconds to go it was a 80-79 score when a foul brought Jack Purchase to the line and he put in both to move the margin back out to three, Nunawading had two attempts for a three to tie but both missed, the Tigers won 82-79 to win their first game of the season.

So, both Tigers teams are on the board with wins, they’ve got Dandenong next and hopefully they can get another sweep and start charging up the ladder.

Go Tigers.

Three Games Into 2023

The 2023 NBL1 South Season is three games in, quite unbelievable but true.

The Women got their first year of the year last weekend by beating Keilor 81-52 after losing their opening games 79-54 (Ballarat) and 86-78 (Waverley), hopefully wins will continue to come now that one is on the board.

The Men have lost their games 92-68 (Ballarat), 91-88 (Waverley) and 84-72 (Keilor), the Tigers form has been patchy, either they’ve been blown away in the first period or have a good start and get run down.

It seems over the years the Tigers Men are playing games where they suddenly get the yips and the opposition bound down the court and score multiple times and the team cannot recover, it doesn’t last long but the damage is always done.

Coming up on Thursday April 20 is Nunawading, it is always good to come up against fellow ex-NBL sides like the Spectres, the Geelong Supercats and the Frankston Bears.

Having games on Thursday nights does trip people up because they are used to Friday to Sunday games but NBL1 decided to speed up the season by adding in another day of games.

It seems to be a long couple of years for the Tigers in terms of success but at least we’re not the 0-26 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (put 0-26 in google and you’ll get the Bucs) or the St Kilda Saints who didn’t win between the 1897 VFL Season and early in the 1900 season, the important thing to remember is that things will get better as the season goes on.

Go Tigers.

The 2023 Season

April 1 is not a joke this year as the Melbourne Tigers start playing in NBL1 South competition for the first time in 2023.

It is true that there hasn’t been a whole lot to say in the last couple of years, life sometimes gets too busy to sit down and write down the joys and the frustrations that a season brings and last year was one of frustration.

Regardless of the results, life always feels good when the Melbourne Tigers are part of Basketball, it is one of those constants in life that is always needed.

It is good that YouTube can be turned on and see how things are going, it is not traditional TV, but it does the job as you can watch it on a TV and the quality is pretty good and the commentators are informative.

It is hard to know if the Tigers will do well this year, the Womens team have brought in experience this year after having a largely youthful team last year which wasn’t a bad idea, you got to get the kilometres into players and giving youth players a run in the NBL1 competition gives the Big V competition that extra bit of oomph and moves development along.

The Men could do well this year, when they get going, they are a great team but when their shooting goes cold the opposition makes the Tigers pay every time hence why last year a frustrating year (thanks Channel Ten) of basketball.

They say Saturday nights all right for fighting well Saturday night will be all right for basketball.
