Tigers Roundup 29/3/16

The long wait for the Melbourne Tigers to play in SEABL is over this week as the SEABL season gets underway against the Spectres on Friday night.

The pre-season hasn’t been too bad as our Tigers won two (Geelong and Albury-Wodonga) and lost three (two to Frankston and one to Nunawading) and the majority of the Tigers squad got a workout in the five games which is the good part for four-five months ago we didn’t have a SEABL squad.

It may be a tough season for the Tigers in SEABL this year, the Tigers are building up a young side that is not too different in style to the Tigers NBL sides in the mid to late 1980’s as players came from the ranks and over time became the Basketball players that taken the side to finals appearances before winning the title in 1993.

We’ve only got Jock Perry for a short amount of time as he is deservedly USA bound and Daryl Corletto won’t be back home from the UK until later on in the season but our current squad plus imports Rob Jones and Bo Liu are good selections for the Tigers and there is no doubt that after a couple of training sessions the newly arrived Bo will fit in well with the team.

Memberships are in the mail for those who have purchased one, they will arrive in time for the SEABL season that starts this Friday night against Nunawading at Nunawading before Canberra comes to play us at MSAC on April 2.

The Melbourne Tigers Basketball page has 737 likes and we the fans really need to help the Tigers get those numbers to take off and climb like a 737 into the thousands as we build the club back to where it belongs, the Kings and Queens of Basketball in Melbourne.

To finish up this blog report, this week is a week to rejoice for it is finally our time to enjoy Basketball every week for the next couple of months, it is good to see the Tigers in competition again this year and let’s make it special no matter what the scoreboard reads.

Go Tigers!

Tigers Roundup (March 17)

681 Tigers fans like the Melbourne Tigers Facebook page, the numbers are steadily climbing and it is hoped the Tigers make it into four figures not too far into the future.

The Tigers have appeared in the Port Phillip Leader, it is on Page 5 of the March 15 edition for those who want a physical copy of the article or click on the link and upon loading select on the right hand side Page 5.

There is 15 days to go until the SEABL season starts, the Tigers are being fine tuned to be ready for the opener against old NBL rivals the Nunawading Spectres on April 1, April 2 is when the Tigers play their first home game at MSAC.

The Ladies teams in the BigV have also been preparing for their season whilst the juniors have played impressively right across the board in recent weeks, Tigers fans are proud of the way they play and conduct themselves on court.

Memberships are still available to buy from the Tigers website and apparel can also be brought online as well, purchases of one or either really helps out the club so purchase if you have the money to spare.

The Melbourne Tigers Historical Page is now stacked with videos from the 1994, 1995 and 1998 seasons, they can be watched anytime from here, each video does run for no less than 54 minutes and so with ten videos that’s a lot of Tigers action.

That is the Tigers Roundup for this edition, until next time Go Tigers!

Tigers Roundup (Feb 19 2016)

The NBL finals may be here but Tigers fans are mostly watching what is happening on the SEABL front as everything becomes more and more concrete.

The SEABL team got their first practice games last weekend as they played against Lanard Copeland’s Hume City Broncos and a US team, Lanard’s team got in a buzzer beater to defeat the Tigers but Tigers fans should be proud the Tigers pushed the Broncos all the way.

Fan response to memberships have been very positive with people snapping up membership packages of all shapes and sizes, Tigers fans are reminded that the $50 supporter package is one off $50 payment and is not $50 per month.

The Tigers internet team have been busy with plenty of news reports being published from Rhys Carter becoming a Tiger to signing up Rob Jones from St Mary’s whilst the ladies have signed former USC Forward Kiki Alofaituli and more, all details on all the signings and more are available here.

The Tigers Facebook page is up to 468 likes, 500 should be reached in a matter of days or a couple of weeks, the page is updated regularly with news so make sure you invite fellow Tigers fans to the page and keep spreading the word.

A very special event is on Sunday 28th of February, Tigers fans can travel down to the MSAC Showcourts to meet the many Tigers teams representing the club in 2016, the event runs from 10am to 11am so make sure your Sunday is a Tigers Sunday.

That is the Tigers Roundup for February 19, check back next week for more fan information from the fan perspective.

Tigers fans answer to Dragons fans comments

Dear Dragons Fans,

We the fans of the Melbourne Tigers thank you for your wonderful post on picknroll.com.au, it had many great points.

Tigers fans love rivalry in the great city of Melbourne, it’s a lot of fun particularly when titles are on the line and NBL history is filled with battles for the city of Melbourne.

After the Victoria Giants in the early 2000’s folded the city was a very lonely place, some may say it started getting lonely back in 1998 when North Melbourne and SE Melbourne merged to become the good yet not so interesting Victoria Titans and then the Victoria Giants (think of once tasty leftovers fried by leaving it in the microwave too long).

It was wonderful when the Dragons came along although at first it did not look like the Dragons could fly let alone breathe fire and then you had to hire our Bogeyman known to the world as Brian Goorjian.

Isn’t it ironic that the man who caused the Tigers so many problems from the 1990’s on was a Tigers player in the 70’s and 80’s, it was a gift to Melbourne basketball that kept on giving and not often to the Tigers.

You won that 2008/09 title fair and square despite Chris Anstey’s efforts to whack your boys senseless and out of the NBL finals, too bad the NBL back in 2009 couldn’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag forcing the Dragons to leave and the Tigers to briefly do the same, in hindsight Tigers fans wish it was permanent because Larry Kestelman would never of appeared.

To get back into the NBL, South Dragons have to please Mr Kestelman the man who brought and killed off the Tigers and now is top of the NBL chain, but it may be a problem because the guy didn’t like the Tigers having the city to themselves and so he created Melbourne United to get 100% market share instead of promoting the need for a second team.

Melbourne United, a team that’s supposed to be for you and for us but most of us aren’t interested because they’re selfish, more selfish than the Tigers apparently were in the eyes of Larry Kestelman, how can people support a team that wants the whole city for themselves and takes everyone’s history while blatantly using retired jersey numbers that are hanging above their heads.

We should add that apart from a video pre-game and a paragraph or two in the history section (they can’t even get the link right) there’s nothing concrete that proves Melbourne United is for every fan from all the teams that died or suspended operations.

Even if they are truly for the state, they wear a blue that looks like it is black and their name and logo looks like something from a soccer club and what is on the jersey looks like a sign from a Las Vegas casino.

Tigers fans who don’t want to be with United would love the Dragons to defeat United if the Tigers can’t do it themselves, some say we should move on but why move on when there was nothing wrong with the Tigers and the Dragons and there was still plenty to achieve for both sides in the NBL.

But if it doesn’t work out with the NBL Dragons fans, there is always the BigV because we Tigers fans have teams there and we would gladly take you on in the battle for Victorian dominance, maybe we can take the rivalry to the CLB that’s coming and take on the NBL together, it would be so much fun.

We’re waiting Dragons, come play.
