Recap on sensational weekend

It’s been a very crazy last couple of days, just a few days ago it was days spent watching Melbourne United’s promotional efforts and wondering what can be gleaned from it for some future Tigers to NBL effort and now here we are excited about the Melbourne Tigers return to SEABL.

So what do we know?

– Tigers are returning to SEABL for the first time since 1983
– Men’s team in 2016, Women’s from 2017
– Andrew Gaze is coach of the Men’s team
– Tigers will play their games at MSAC
– The Age cares about the Tigers (Roy Ward in particular)
– Lindsay Gaze is still very hard working
– There’s still plans for the NBL

We’ll be playing against old NBL pals the Nunawading Spectres, Geelong Supercats and The Frankston Blues who were the Bears in the NBL and a host of other teams from Tasmania all the way to Queensland including the Ballarat Miners who still celebrate defeating the 1989 Tigers.

Player signings are still yet to be revealed and there is no membership details or season fixture in place yet but we can wait patiently for those and expect an avalanche of Tigers information when they are revealed.

There’s VJBL news as well, Congratulations to Georgie Nolan for first being a nominee for Girls Got Game and then being the Week 4 winner, well done Tigers fans on voting for her too for those is no doubt that Georgie is fully deserving of the win.

Don’t forget to come on home to the official Tigers Facebook page, 230 fans have joined the page so far and as the word spreads about the Tigers return to SEABL.

Let’s see what comes our way next week.

Go Tigers!

Gaze to coach SEABL team

Andrew Gaze is officially the coach of the Melbourne Tigers SEABL team, this news is hardly a shock to fans as it was considered inevitable that the NBL legend turned Big V coach would take the next step and coach in SEABL.

The Tigers will be playing at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC)  using both Show Court and Court 1, The Tigers being at MSAC is already familiar for Tigers fans as the Big V teams played at MSAC.

Player signings will come in the future, this has gotten fans curious as to who will be part of the team that will begin this new phase of the Tigers return to being one of the most well known sport teams in Australia.

Some fans have stated that the Tigers should go for the young player approach whilst some desire players from Melbourne United and other NBL teams.

There is still a lot for the Tigers to unveil such as sponsors, coaching staff and memberships but every bit of information is met with enthusiastic responses from Tigers fans and there is no doubt the enthusiasm will continue into 2016.

Tigers now part of SEABL family

The heading of this story is not a joke, it was tweeted by Chris Anstey today and confirmed by others that the Melbourne Tigers will be joining SEABL.

This writer was just going through tweets on this nice looking SE QLD Sunday when Chris Anstey’s tweet sent a wave of dizziness as this was the good news that we’ve been waiting so long for.

Was it true? Was it a joke? Surely it was true and not a joke for Chris Anstey would never do that to fans and so the waiting game began with constant Twitter checks and hoping somebody would confirm or deny the story.

It wasn’t long before the avalanche of information came, first Andrew Gaze liked Chris Anstey’s tweet, major Tigers fan Graham Allen commented that it was true then Nigel Purchase tweeted the announcement is tomorrow.

To BigV, we love the competition and as we don’t know yet what will happen to the Tigers and BigV but we like to say that if the Tigers go we thank you for all you’ve done having us and if we stay we sure look forward to 2016.

To SEABL, Thank you for letting the Tigers into your competition, we are very grateful to you and Tigers fans hope the team will justify your decision through dedication, conduct and results.

To Tigers officials, you are our heroes for working day and night to get the Tigers into competition like SEABL, it must not of been easy considering the work that needed to be done from getting rights to start shopping for talent and coaches.

To our fellow Tigers fans, At times sticking with the Tigers while United was running hot and mass backed by the press would of been difficult to take but now the Tigers are going into a bigger competition people will see the Tigers are alive and well and your choice has been well justified.

Celebrate today/tonight Tigers fans!

850 likes for South Dragons page

The South Dragons fans have pushed their page calling on their return past 850 likes of Facebook.

The page currently has a total of 851 likes and there is no reason why the fans can push that total closer to 1000 before the year is out which is only 29 days away.

Getting to 1,000 likes would be an important step for Dragons fans as it would cement it’s spot as the team Victorian fans are calling for to be the second Melbourne team in the NBL.

It is also important for Dragons fans for as the league is reportedly running hot the competition to enter the league would be hotting up and so the Dragons must stake their claim with mass fan support.

Readers may wonder why a predominantly Melbourne Tigers site is saying all this and the answer is the above is factual and also this writer believes in the pursuit of (legal and sane) happiness and if the South Dragons returning to the NBL makes people happy then so be it.

Those who love/loved the South Dragons or just want an alternative to Melbourne United can visit and choose to like the page by clicking here.

WANMU will continue to report on the Dragons fans progress as it happens.

Giddey coaches team to success

Warrick Giddey has coached his Melbourne Tigers 12.1 team to victory in their section of the Southern Peninsular Tournament.

The 12.1’s went on a scoring spree with the side defeating Diamond Valley
73 to 30.

The 14.2’s also won their tournament section against Bulleen Two 25 to 19  and the 14.4’s finished runner up to Korumburra 1 in theirs making it a successful tournament on court for the Tigers.

Away from the results, the tournament was a success for the team as it’s sides bonded over the weekend ensuring the VJBL season will be a good one for the Tigers regardless of the results.

WANMU congratulates the Tigers teams on their successful tournament adventure.

Almost one season closer

We are now in the final days of Spring, The NBL is 8 rounds into it’s season and junior Basketballers are plying their trade around the country.

Tigers fans are watching their juniors with interest particularly those whose ages allow them to make their case to play in the State Championship Men’s and Women’s teams or the Youth teams.

Senior team lineups for 2016 will undoubtedly be different to this year as several Tigers have either gone to the USA, playing for other BigV teams or have gone on to other competitions.

2015 has been a good year for Tigers fans, the team scored more wins, memberships got a boost, social media input and output went up and with a month still to go there’s even more room for the Tigers to grow before we get into 2016.

The Tigers future rests in our hands, never forget that the little acts is what pushes things forward so like pictures, like posts, retweet and like tweets from the Tigers for those little actions keep things rolling.

To finish this new post, below is a YouTube video of Joshua White scoring many points and assists for the Tigers this year, some of the scores you’ll see are excellent long range shots and if you look closely in the background you may see an icon or two.

Fans ‘like’ Tigers FB page

The Melbourne Tigers FB page is starting to pick up business with a 12% increase in the amount of likes the page has had.

The page now has a total of 142 likes up from 124 which was the total early on Saturday morning.

Fans who have arrived at the page can now find out all about the Tigers Big V SCW, SCM, VYCW, VYCM and Junior Girls programs in the one place and there is no doubt activity will start increasing as the juniors keep playing and the seniors preparations for 2016 pick up speed.

WANMU believes that the Tigers Basketball tops the officials and some of the players are wearing are looking quite good and would make excellent merchandise for fans to buy online, they appear to come in both grey and black ensuring great variety.

The Tigers Girls Twitter account (https://twitter.com/MelbTigersGirls) is approaching the 250 followers milestone with the account sitting on 223 followers at this present time, the account also recently made their 1,500th tweet.

There is no doubt that the Tigers page will soon pass 150 likes and continue on it’s way to bigger numbers, it has a long way to go to catch Melbourne United’s 40,000 likes but with the Tigers steadily rebuilding catching and passing United is certainly not an impossibility and even less an impossibility if you the reader like the page too.

Kestelman to break more hearts?

Townsville fans were last night celebrating their side defeating Melbourne United at Hisense Arena.

This morning they woke up to find Larry Kestelman imploring Townsville fans to turn up to games or face a real risk of losing their team.

Townsville have had poor attendances to their games this season by averaging under 2000 people per game however it should be noted that Townsville have had varying form, three home games and games mid-week that are considered the league’s graveyard shift.

The graveyard shift is games played from Wednesday to Friday, all teams have struggled to fill seats on nights where most families are resting from work or school.

Melbourne United had just over 6000 last night, in the 4000’s and 5,000’s on other nights but on Sundays they threaten or do achieve 8000-9000 which is a big increase on the previous figures and they are league leaders at this point of the season.

A couple of dozen words of advice to Townsville fans, when Larry Kestelman silently removed the Tigers from the NBL there was no inkling of it coming and so by giving Townsville advance warning the people have the option of doing something about the fate of their club.

Go to the games if you have the time and can afford to go and enjoy your team Townsville while you still have them because if the league expands you may not get them again.

Gaze returns to NBL commentating

Andrew Gaze returns to NBL commentating this Saturday night after being surprisingly left out of Fox Sports roster of commentators at the start of the season.

Fans and not just Melbourne Tigers fans couldn’t believe a guy with so much experience was left out in favor of NRL and AFL commentators but now it has been corrected all seems right in the NBL world apart from the sad fact there’s no Melbourne Tigers in the competition.

There is some bad news with Andrew now sidelined from SEN duties after the station shaken up it’s 2016 lineup and have removed Andy Maher, Andrew and Tim Watson from the morning program.

Andrew is not the only guy on the outer with Kevin Bartlett also appearing to be out as well, Kevin hosts ‘Hungry for Sport’ which was a wide ranging sports show and a great source of information.

With Kevin Bartlett apparently out of the lineup, Nigel Purchase will have to  discuss Basketball with somebody new but WANMU hopes both Andrew and Nigel will pick up radio shows and segments on SEN in the near future.

NBL fans are now disappointed with the news the competition is now on Fox Sports 3 instead of Fox Sports News, Fox Sports News is a channel Pay TV subscribers can get standard but you have to pay for the privilege of Fox Sports 3.

In summing up, it’s been a good week and a bad week for Andrew Gaze and it’s been a good week and a bad week for NBL fans.

Theoretical Tigers jersey retirements

Hanging up somewhere at Hisense Arena and other places is the six retired jerseys of the Melbourne Tigers.

#6 Giddey
#8 Gordon
#10 Gaze
#21 Copeland
#25 Simmons
#50 Bradkte

All of them earned this honour through long service and NBL title success and so we’ve got to thinking what happened if the Tigers could retire a seventh jersey number, who could be that seventh person to be immortalized by the club?

Below is several names, it has to be noted that these below selections are just a discussion starter and then get into the business of extending that number.

#5 – Brian Goorjian
#11 – Dave Thomas (#32 also an option)
#12 – Nigel Purchase
#13 – Chris Anstey and/or Al Westover
#33 – Stephen Hoare
#44 – Darryl McDonald

Goorjian, Purchase and Westover were all part of the Tigers inaugural NBL squad in 1984, both Goorjian and Westover coached in the NBL and both won titles (Goorjian 6 with various clubs and Westover 2 as assistant to Lindsay Gaze and 2 as coach of the Tigers) and Nigel Purchase has been associated with the Melbourne Tigers for over three decades with both the NBL and BigV sides.

Darryl McDonald has won many individual honours as a Tiger as well as two titles and he also served as interim coach of the Tigers following the removals of Westover and Gleeson during the period of craziness the Tigers underwent in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s.

Stephen Hoare and Dave Thomas starred with the Tigers in the 2000’s and both won two titles with the club which puts them in contention, Hoare was also named best Sixth Man twice and Thomas made the NBL First Team in 2007 which further strengthens their case.

There are so many people worthy of having retired jerseys in their honour and WANMU works to make sure they get that opportunity in the future for there is so many stories left to be told to fans of all generations.
