Which title is the best?

1993 or 1997?
2005/06 or 2007/08?

As most Tigers fans know the Tigers after going through the 1980’s empty handed won two titles each in the 1990’s and 2000’s and contested an additional two Grand Final series each in both decades.

Each title win is memorable for their own reasons, 1993 was won over in Perth where the Tigers had to win over there for the first time to win the title and 1997 was a year that started horribly before the incredible winning streak that (Melbourne United needs another six to match) propelled the Tigers to the title against the Magic which avenged the narrow losses in 1992 and 1996.

Then came 2005/06 when Brian Goorjian and his Kings were dominating the league and the Tigers dispatched them with relative ease and then the 2007/08 series was a series of thrills as it went down to the wire with the Tigers winning the decider in Sydney to take the title 3-2.

Each title won brought a great level of satisfaction, beating the Wildcats in Perth to the dismay of their fans in 1993 was something to behold, beating the Magic was always something special and beating Brian Goorjian twice more was something to be pleased with as the Tigers finally won more series than lost against him (Brian struck back with the South Dragons in 2008/09 making it 3-3).

So which is the best win of them all? Is there a definitive answer or perhaps the answer just simply is………

All of them.

Petition update – November 11 2015

The petition is doing well at this time, there is currently 131 signatures and with the surge of interest in the Melbourne Tigers it is hoped that the amount of signatures will rise to challenge the 150 signature mark real soon.

For those not in the know, the petition is calling on the owners of Melbourne United to give up the Melbourne Tigers name, colours and history so the original Melbourne Tigers who is the mother/father of the club going around as Melbourne United can participate in competitions higher than the BigV as well as be allowed to do other things to expand the team’s income.

As it stands right now, the Tigers cannot compete in the NBL, SEABL and CLB which are either semi-professional or professional and this is why getting those rights is important because those three competitions are well known and fans want the team to be part of the action.

It is hoped that we, the fans of the Melbourne Tigers can unite in this petition to show the rights owners that we truly believe in our Tigers and a separation of the Tigers and United is good for Basketball particularly in the future as there is no doubt the two teams will meet on court.

Building the social media network

There is no doubt now fellow Tigers fans that journalists and bloggers etc aren’t yet interested in Tigers fans efforts in making the Tigers the second Melbourne NBL team in the competition.

So how do we change that? For starters it is up to us, Tigers fans have to generate the interest themselves by showing the passion and dedication fans have for the team and the goal of returning to the NBL and that may seem difficult but it really isn’t because a Tweet can be written in about the same time as watching a cat video and liking and retweeting is a click and done thing.

Below is a list of Basketball reporters, stars and bloggers who could potentially be Twittered to persuasion to come and have a look at fans efforts at Rebuilding Our Melbourne Tigers and Save The Melbourne Tigers, they may comment negatively but we’ll take it because they’ve taken the time to acknowledge us and may set people’s curiosity off.

Some NBL fans may not be aware the Melbourne Tigers still exists so you might have to explain that because there is a chance people just think we’re bitter fans and not club re-builders or expanders.

If we can get 10 people tweeting that’s good, if all ten retweet the others tweets then it goes into multiplication and if the retweets get retweeted it reaches more people and if people comment on tweets it goes further and then we’ve got a commodity.

Lastly there’s the whole realm of hashtags so in tweets could put in #MelbourneTigers, #Tigers, #WeAreMelbourneToo, #Wewereherefirst, #TigersForNBL, #TigersAreUnited (that will stump people) and lots more, if enough people use the same hashtag it trend in the nation.

It can be done, believe it, do it and achieve it.

Go Tigers!

The Age Sport wrongly targets Andrew Gaze

When Andrew Gaze was interviewed by Fox Sports today, he wouldn’t of expected The Age to post on Twitter that he questioned Melbourne United’s sportsmanship with the Age Sport saying ‘Andrew Gaze joins chorus questioning Melbourne United sportsmanship‘.

The headline on the actual article does little better with the headline stating ‘Andrew Gaze joins chorus questioning Melbourne United’s win over NZ Breakers

Andrew like many others questioned the referee’s decision that enabled Melbourne United to tie the scores before another questionable foul handed the side the win.

Andrew said “It was a shocking, shocking way for a game to end in basketball,” and “What a shemozzle, that is just umpires not understanding the spirit of the game, the way it should be played and that is just an unfortunate mistake, they’ve made a bad mistake.

As you can see Andrew does not mention Melbourne United and is talking about the umpires and the spirit of the game, there is no doubt the controversial headlines will get The Age (Melbourne’s #2 paper) readers but will no doubt gain a reputation for click bait headlines that have no shred of truth to it.

The Age Sport, You’ve been given a foul and it’s a correct one too.

Wrong

Wrong 2

Clawing our way along to success

First off, WANMU doesn’t believe there is a conspiracy by the NBL ensuring Melbourne United wins like it did today against the Breakers by getting the refs to manipulate results, what happened today was bad calls by the referees which is a problem league wide so Mr Kestelman needs to put that on the fix list just ahead of putting us back into competition.

Secondly things are going good, Rebuilding Our Melbourne Tigers is just nine likes away from reaching 500 likes and it is hoped that milestone will be reached really soon because it is a great place to be at and has the right mix of memories and future ambitions and opinions are very valued.

The Tigers Girls were in action at Geelong this weekend and they played with Tiger spirit and integrity no matter if they were on the right or wrong side of the scoreline when the final whistle blows, we hope all Tigers sides that participated had a great time in the tournament.

Other Tigers teams not at Geelong were busy training at MSAC and they have come up with several new ideas to improve on their game play and by the looks of things coaches, teammates, family, friends and fans will be impressed by their new techniques.

Rebuilding Our Melbourne Tigers is now on Twitter and looks forward to being followed by readers and tweeting Tigers news and memories which are highly valued by fans, for those new to Twitter below are links to several Twitter accounts that fans may love to visit in the near future.

For the next 22 hours there is a poll on Twitter asking if the Tigers should be the second Melbourne NBL club, votes can be submitted by clicking here.

Don’t worry about United fellow Tigers fans, they may be getting big crowds and are 9-0 but they are warming up the crowds for our return in the future or at the very least warming up the public for the 2016 BigV season which promises to be great for the Melbourne Tigers.

Go Tigers!

Tigers on radio

The Melbourne Tigers have had many media suiting personalities in the team over the years and it is good that we can hear or see some of them regularly in the media as well.

Tigers fans can get their Andrew Gaze fix five days a week on SEN’s ‘Morning Glory’, he joins Andy Maher and Tim Watson to discuss all there is to do with sport and more, the show runs from 7am to 9am and can be heard here on SEN’s website or if listeners want to catch up on individual interviews can choose from here.

Nigel Purchase is also on SEN when he discusses NBA and NBL with Kevin Bartlett on ‘Hungry For Sport’, Nigel is a dedicated Tiger and while it must no doubt be distasteful for him to talk United, he does it with professionalism and we know one day he’ll be talking about the Tigers again soon, to go through ‘Hungry For Sport’ audio visit the show’s page here.

WANMU will continue to report on Tigers on the radio to point you towards the best news and information from the Tigers stars and legends themselves.

How to stay positive amidst the deluge

Melbourne United are 7-0 in the current NBL season and the press is going nuts over them, the NBL is everywhere (about time) and while this is happening Tigers fans are months away from getting to see their team in competition.

How do Tigers fans stay positive through it all? Most deal with it easily because they aren’t interested in Melbourne United, some have chosen one of the other seven NBL teams to follow and others follow the WNBL or local competitions to fill in time before the BigV season starts sometime in 2016.

The ‘Rebuilding Our Melbourne Tigers‘ Facebook page (formerly Save Our Melbourne Tigers) has spent time recently remodeling it’s page to become a page that keeps fans updated on past, present and future Tigers, it will also keep fans alerted to the status of the petition which now sits at 128 signatures and more, the page has 489 likes and hopes to celebrate 500 likes real soon.

Tigers fans can expect other Tigers fan pages and groups to steer towards a more positive outlook as they move away from displaying anger towards Melbourne United to displaying positive news about the Tigers and get people interested in Tigers news and the 2016 BigV season, it is hoped that the change will get the Tigers towards their goal of getting the rights off United sooner rather than later.

The Melbourne Tigers website is still pumping out information and as reported earlier more news will come out as they expand to include senior ranks as it currently focuses on the juniors who as visitors will see are doing extremely well with Tigers teams playing in Geelong this weekend.

There’s a lot of good things happening Tigers fans so keep on visiting the website and visit the Facebook pages and groups and always feel free to post or comment anything you like that’s related to topics and just enjoy yourselves.

Go Tigers.

The power of Lanard Copeland

Lanard Copeland, one of the few NBL stars past or present to be as popular off court as he is on the court.

We say ‘is on the court’ because Lanard still plays, those who watched the Red Bull Reign would of seen him and D-Mac partner up to play some three on three basketball, spotlightreport.net reported on his playing and unfortunately D-Mac was named Darren not Darryl in the report which no doubt would raise the ire of Giants and Tigers fans around the nation.

Lanard loves the Tigers so much that when Melbourne United came he told the media that he told them he wanted his retired #21 Tigers jersey taken down from where United play because he played for the Tigers and want nothing to do with Melbourne United.

In the 2014/15 season Tigers fans watched amused as the #21 jersey was still hanging up and then fans got annoyed when on the court the #21 was being used by a Melbourne United player, this year #21 is not being used but the retired #6 and #8 are.

What endears Lanard to the public off court is that he tells things as he sees them, just like what he told the world about Melbourne United or his thoughts on who his favourite NBL and NBA starting five would be and so much more.

Lanard’s interview on The Pick and Roll makes excellent reading and is perhaps one of the best interviews in recent times as you can sense a lot of emotions from his thoughts on beating the Magic after the Tigers were seemingly out for the count to his thoughts on Lindsay Gaze and how Lindsay’s coaching techniques help Lanard today.

For those who don’t know, Lanard coaches in BigV with the Hume City Broncos and takes on the Tigers twice a year with 2015 ending in a one wins each draw, what makes it more enthralling for Tigers fans is that the coach of the Tigers is none other than Andrew Gaze and they play for

Lanard coached the Broncos to finals and there is no doubt that Lanard will continue to make the Broncos and any future teams (hopefully the Tigers) successful in future seasons.

In a final statement on Lanard’s popularity, ‘Rebuilding Our Melbourne Tigers’ posted The Pick And Roll interview on it’s page yesterday and at this time of writing it has been seen by over 2,000 people and shared a dozen times illustrating the fact that when Lanard speaks, people listen.

All roads from the Tigers lead to more

The Melbourne Tigers have in the couple of weeks have released lots of information that will bring a cheer to Tigers fans around the world.

Five Melbourne Tigers U/14 Girls are playing for Vic Metro in the Southern Cross Challenge in 2016, they will play against other teams with the aim to develop players and not be consumed by the thought of winning, Tigers fans can learn all about the five here, we congratulate the five on their selection and wish them the best in 2016.

Ten Tigers players who have given their all for the club as juniors are currently in the United States playing College Basketball, the fact that ten are playing in the highly competitive system proves that the Melbourne Tigers are a strong basketball club who gives players what they need to progress further, find out who the ten are and who they are playing for here.

The junior girls have published their playing lists for 2016, fans may recognize some of the names of the coaches and even the last names of some of the players too, we wish all Tigers teams well of luck training for the 2016 season and hope it will be a fun and injury free experience.

Go Tigers!.

Can 5,500 people be enough?

With all the glitz and glamour of the NBL, our eyes turn to the stands to see just how filled they are in order to see what a new Melbourne side needs to be a success.

Melbourne United have been struggling to approach full houses despite a hot start and lots and lots of promos, Perth meanwhile have had two games at Perth Arena and have had 11,645 and 10,423 people attend it’s 14,846 person arena so those figures make Perth Arena 78.44% and 70.21% filled.

Hisense Arena can hold 10,500 for Basketball if areas are not curtained off and so if we ignore the curtained off areas and count every seat, the 7,009 people who attended the opening home game filled Hisense Arena only 66.75% of the arena’s maximum design and the second game had an attendance of 5,243 fans which filled 49.93% of Hisense Arena.

So based on those figures Perth had a higher percentage of seats filled by margins of 11.69% and 20.28% which is quite a significant total.

Now if we say Hisense tops out at 7,009 as the press said 7,009 was capacity then the second Hisense game was filled to 74.80% capacity which is a massive difference from 49.93% of a 10,500 seat Arena to 74.80% of a 7,009 seat configuration of the same arena.

The average total of games at Hisense so far is about 5,500, it could be slightly higher or lower due to one of the games not having a published total so United needs to fill Hisense Arena to about 75 to 80% of the apparent 7,009 person capacity to keep above average but then again management can take the covers off seats or add covers anytime which screws totals up yet make them look good or bad depends on who is reporting.

Now we know that United can get 10,000 people, we saw it last year and one occasion was hailed as a great day for Victorian Basketball even though Tigers and Magic fans would likely say ‘Been there, Done that’ and Fox Sports believes that attendance will go up in the summer and if they are right then perhaps United will challenge those levels especially if the hot form continues.

The South Dragons also came close to 10,000 on October 18 2008 when they got 9,308 people into Hisense Arena followed by 8,093 people on February 8 2009 and 8,201 and 8,922 to the second and fifth game of the Grand Final series on March 8 and 13 2009 all games were against the Melbourne Tigers which supports the theory that Victorian vs Victorian games bring out more fans than Victorian vs Other for attendance was down into the 3,000-4,000 range.

Hopefully somewhere out there a basketball consortium is seeing what we see and say right if we get a minimum of 5,500 to our games in the early part of the season then we can challenge Melbourne United in the NBL and then aim to keep pace as holidays are in full swing from December to late January.

Can it be done? With the cash being thrown around it is entirely possible heck it could even be a certainty if you pick a club that has runs on the board like a Melbourne Tigers, South Dragons, SE Melbourne Magic, Geelong Supercats (SEABL success story) and even the Coburg Giants who have been in the NBL and are playing elsewhere.

Every now and then teams who are formed from nothing are hits because they get the right playing address, right people behind desks, right staff and right players but rich people probably want to play it safe and go for an established team name, colours and history like what happened with the Sydney Kings and soon the Brisbane Bullets.

We can only hope.
